San Miguel Beer dismantles Phoenix, 110-88

San Miguel Beer brought Good Friday a week early on Phoenix Petroleum.

The Philippine Cup champ stamped its class on Phoenix Petroleum and showed no mercy in a 110-88 victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.

The Beermen established momentum in the second period and sustained an overpowering performance to the end of the lopsided victory keeping SMB in the company of Alaska Milk and Star as the remaining unbeaten teams in the tourney.

June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross and import Charles Rhodes, SMB’s super core group, all churned out sterling games, powering the Beermen to a second straight win following a 99-92 decision over the Meralco Bolts Sunday.

The Beermen just didn’t leave any opening on the Phoenix side coming off a 94-91 upset win over Barangay Ginebra the last time out.

An atrocious 36-percent shooting didn’t help the Fuel Masters as they suffered a third loss against two wins.

Struggling so badly was Matthew Wright who went 0-of-13 from the field just after a 27-point game against the Gin Kings in Davao City Friday.

Not helping either was Cyrus Baguio’s 0-of-7 clip.

In contrast, the Beermen were in a great groove on both ends as best typified by Fajardo’s performance laced with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assist and one steal.

His 22-point job included couples of dunks and baskets he finished on good drives to the basket. Among his highlight moves on the defensive end included a block on import Jameel McKay and a steal on Phoenix rookie guard Jeff Viernes.

It was an easy job for the Beermen who posted a 55-40 lead at the half and kept a comfortable spread all the way to the final buzzer.

Rhodes finished with a double-double game with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Cabagnot, Lassiter, Ross and Santos contributed at least 11 points each.

With Ronald Tubid serving suspension, Keith Agovida and Rashawn McCarthy got some minutes and they produced 10 points between the two of them.

McKay led Phoenix with 21 markers and 16 boards.
