3-team trade reunites Baguio with long time coach Guiao at NLEX

Cyrus Baguio, at the twilight of his career, is reunited at NLEX with his original coach Yeng Guiao and Red Bull teammate Larry Fonacier.

NLEX, GlobalPort and Phoenix Petroleum consummated Tuesday a trade deal that also involved former Gilas players Mac Baracael and Dylan Ababou.

NLEX and GlobalPort first agreed on a one-on-one swap between Baracael and Ababou, both members of the original Gilas pool under coach Rajko Toroman.

Then the Road Warriors acquired Baguio from the Fuel Masters in exchange for Ababou plus NLEX’s 2020 second round draft rights.

Baguio played for a longtime under Guiao at Red Bull before moving to Burger King, Barangay Ginebra, Alaska Milk and Phoenix Petroleum.

He was Red Bull’s 14th pick overall in the celebrated 2003 draft class featuring Mike Cortez, Rommel Adducul and Eddie Laure as the top three picks. Also in the same class were Harvey Carey, Billy Mamaril, Rico Villanueva, Reynel Hugnatan, Jimmy Alapag and Ronald Tubid.

Baguio, a former Santo Tomas U stalwart, also played under Guiao in the Philippine team to the Tianjian Asian joust in 2009.

Another former ward that’s now with Guiao at NLEX is 6-foot-4 center/forward JR Quinahan.

Since Guiao started to tweak the NLEX lineup, the Road Warriors have made a big turnaround from being an also-ran to an early frontrunner in the current PBA Governors Cup.

The Road Warriors are at 5-1.
